A Wall of Keys and What It Reminded Me Of

Wall display of keys with blue tags and a sign reading Keys to Home about housing solutions in Northern Arizona.

I was at the Housing Solutions of Northern Arizona fundraising breakfast recently, and I want to tell you about a wall.

It was covered in keys. One for each family that had received housing assistance or first-time homebuyer support through their programs. People from all over this community came up and hung their key on that wall. I hung one too. When they announced the final count, it was 501 families.

I sat with that number for a while.

Home is where families are raised. Where memories are made. Where people feel safe, feel seen, feel like they belong. The work Housing Solutions does — especially at Sharon Manor, serving women and families impacted by domestic violence — is the kind of work that creates a foundation people can build an entire life from. Seeing firefighters, teachers, neighbors, and strangers all in the same room advocating for that together? It was one of those moments that reminds you what a community can do when it decides something matters.

What 501 Keys Have to Do with Estate Planning

It also reminded me, in a quieter way, of why I do the work I do.

The plans we build with clients are about the same thing, really. Home isn't just a physical address — it's the life you've built, the people you've protected, the values you want to carry forward. Estate planning is how you make sure that foundation holds, even when you're not there to tend to it yourself.

For families, that might mean ensuring a surviving spouse can stay in their home. For a first-time homeowner, it means making sure a hard-earned asset doesn't get tangled up in probate. For a parent, it means naming the right guardian so the most important person in your world is cared for the right way.

A home is one of the most meaningful things most of us will ever own. A plan makes sure it goes where you intend — and that the people inside it are protected.

Community Shows Up

Two smiling women pose indoors; one wears a Patricia name tag, with pendant lights and a blue pin-covered wall behind them.

What struck me most about that breakfast was the room itself. It wasn't just donors. It was neighbors. People who understood that when one family has a stable foundation, the whole community is stronger for it.

That's the same spirit that drives the work at Flagstaff Law Group. We're not just filling out legal forms — we're helping people protect what they've built and take care of the people they love. That connection between home, community, and planning felt very present in that room.

Housing Solutions of Northern Arizona is doing extraordinary work opening doors in this community. I'd encourage you to learn more about their programs and the ways our neighbors are showing up in support of their mission.

And if seeing 501 keys on a wall got you thinking about your own foundation — what you've built, who you'd want to protect it — we'd love to have that conversation with you.
